NISAR’s L-Band Radar Reveals ‘Hummingbird’ in Antarctica
Core point
The NISAR satellite's L-band radar has produced an image of Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja in East Antarctica. This mountaintop is surrounded by a stream of ice, causing stresses that lead to deep cracks known as crevasses. The image, nicknamed 'the hummingbird,' was created using polarized microwave signals. NISAR is the first satellite to carry two SAR instruments at different wavelengths.
